Chickie Rosenberg

What do you do professionally in the snowboarding world?
I teach at Killington and have written two books on snowboarding:
Snowboarding for Women: a guide for the Betty Shred Wannabe and Snowboarding for Men: a guide for guys.

Started riding in what year?  1989

Where did you grow up? Maplewood, NJ

Live now? West Orange, NJ and Killington, VT

Fave places to ride?  Killington, of course, Snowbird

Chickie at Killington, VT.

Do you warm up each day before you ride?  Not in terms of stretching, just go down a very easy trail to get myself moving and into the groove.

How keep in shape in season?  Snowboarding keeps me active and burning lots of calories because I am out there on the mountain so many days.

How keep in shape for snowboarding out of season?  I run.

Do you ever get bummed out about your riding, and why?  We all have bad days but usually it's because we don't focus and concentrate on what we are doing.  Our personal thoughts tend to distract us and cause lack of attention.

How do you fix it?  I go riding with my friends.

What safety equipt. do you  wear, use for snowboarding?  Just a helmet.

What have you read / listened to / seen that you liked lately?  I just saw an exhibit at the Cooper Hewett National Design Museum (Smithsonian Institute) in New York.  It's a  museum of decorative arts, and the exhibit was entitled "Extreme Textiles: Designing for High Performance" but of course when one has snowboarding on your mind all the time, I was fascinated by the experimental fabrics I saw.  Among other things, there was a Gore-Tex glove (made by Grandoe) used by Will Steger on the 1989 Trans-Antartic Expedition, a "Speed-monster" speed skiing helmet for aerodynamic performance which breaks away in event of falling, revealing a protective inner helmet, and Malden Mill's experimental electronic polartec fleece fabric which is made up of microscopic conductive fibers to maintain body temperatures up to 5 hours in extreme cold.  The exhibit runs through Oct. 30.

Anything that not many people know about you that you would like to share?  Encouraging words for beginners?  Stay with it, be focused, and take a lesson from a professional instructor.  Friends can't teach friends how to snowboard.  And read my books!
